Often overshadowed by its towering neighbor Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is a stunning volcano rising to 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) inside Arusha National Park. It is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and a favorite for climbers seeking fewer crowds, abundant wildlife, and spectacular scenery.
The Meru trek is ideal for acclimatization before climbing Kilimanjaro or as a standalone adventure. The trail winds through lush forest where trekkers often spot giraffes, buffalos, colobus monkeys, and flamingos, before ascending into alpine terrain and reaching the dramatic crater rim.
Unlike Kilimanjaro, climbers are accompanied by an armed ranger due to the presence of wildlife within the national park. The hike typically takes 3 to 4 days and offers one of the most breathtaking summit sunrises overlooking both Mount Kilimanjaro and the crater below.
